![]() ![]() The Waikiki Aquarium was founded in 1904 and has been administered by the University of Hawaii since 1919. ![]() The giant clams in this exhibit are likely the oldest anywhere in captivity. It features a 5,500-gallon habitat containing more than 100 species of fish, live coral and giant clam. Many of the species highlighted in this exhibit are actually part of the diet of the indigenous people of the Pacific Islands as well.īarrier Reef – The Barrier Reef exhibit is the focal point of the South Pacific Marine Communities gallery. Reef Predators – At the Reef Predators exhibit, kids discover numerous fish that prey on other fish and who also find themselves prey for larger ocean creatures like sharks. The clownfish are a favorite among young visitors to the Waikiki Aquarium. Fish swim and find shelter in coral reefs that lie between the shoreline and the offshore reefs that surround many Pacific Islands. The Lagoon Corals – The Lagoon Corals exhibit features various live corals with their fleshy, large polyps swaying gently in the current. Dozens of clownfish nestle within a living carpet of anemone and the symbiotic nature of the pairing is truly fascinating. The Reef Partners – While visiting The Reef Partners exhibit, you’ll find out about the many beneficial relationships on a reef including that between sea anemones and clownfish. Here, children discover the importance of seagrasses, which are common aquatic plants that help create a lush under-the-sea forest environment to protect young fish and invertebrates. Land Meets the Sea – The Land Meets Sea exhibit showcases a living mangrove forest filled with plants and fish that are normally found on the coastlines of tropical regions. Waikiki Aquarium’s South Pacific Marine Communities gallery includes 5 exhibits that highlight the importance of the ecological communities and habitats within the Pacific marine region, along with threats to these communities and habitats. The South Pacific Marine Communities Gallery The mystery of this animal-rich part of our world comes to life beautifully at the Waikiki Aquarium, one of the most popular Honolulu Attractions. The Pacific coral reef stretches from southern Japan all the way to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. This tropical aquatic habitat is home to more than 4,000 species of fish and 400 species of coral. Kids who visit the Waikiki Aquarium, located at 2777 Kalakaua Avenue, learn about the incredible diversity of marine life on the coral reefs of the Pacific Ocean. ![]()
